Because my artist-roots come from model-photography I still very much enjoy creating different kind of portraits in my digital artworks. Often these portraits are created using mixed media combining photography, painting, sketching and 3d rendering sometimes even with newspaper clippings. But all my portraits have high contrasts in common.
If people ask me about my art style I tell them I think it is a mix between expressionism and modern pop art with a touch of postmodernism. When I asked about this mix of styles from ai what that art style would look like I got this response;

“That’s an interesting question. Postmodernism is an artistic movement that rejected Modern art and idealism, and embraced diverse styles and perspectives. Expressionism is a style that depicts the subjective emotions and responses of the artist through distortion, exaggeration, and vivid colors. Modern pop art is a movement that drew inspiration from popular and commercial culture, such as comics, advertising, and celebrities.
An artstyle that combines these elements might look like something that challenges the conventions of traditional art forms, expresses personal feelings and opinions, and incorporates references to mass media and consumerism. For example, you could imagine a painting that uses bright colours and comic-style fonts to portray a political or social message with irony or humor.” I think this describes my art style pretty nice.

Let me start with ‘Vintage Portrait’ which is a mixed media artwork based on a photo I made from a photo model in my photo studio and combined with a hat I photographed and a photographed background. Digital painting completed the artwork where I was going for a retro or vintage vibe. My signature style with high contrasts and a hint of red is definitely recognisable in the piece. I have hidden her eyes so to make the portrait anonymous and more abstract. The artwork is a prints bestseller in my ArtHeroes shop.
I have taken this portrait for a remix to celebrate the success of the artwork. The resulting mixed-media artwork has amazing details and colors and takes the original to a new level. I have now drawn the work in a more cartoon style and added extra details with a rough sketch. The background now features many more details, such as an old newspaper. Several (flower) elements have been added to the foreground, resulting in a very cheerful and detailed artwork to hang on your wall.”

Next I want to talk about my African Beauties because I really love to work with them and create stunning portraits of them. My first African Beauty is as a painting of an African woman wearing traditional clothing. It quickly became a big success in my print shop and you can probably see why.

The terra tones of the background compliment her beautiful skin tones and her headwear gives the portrait a color pop. The portrait shows a strong independent woman complimented by the use of the rim lighting. Check out the details of this portrait in my ArtHeroes store by clicking on the image.
I have made a couple of different versions of the same concept, so feel free to look around my shop to see which one you like best.

The second African Beauty is also a best-selling artwork in my ArtHeroes print shop and is called ‘Vintage African Beauty’. I tried to mix both bestsellers ‘Vintage Portrait’ with ‘African Beauty’ with this artwork as the final result. Another stunning African woman posed frontal wearing her traditional clothing. As with the original ‘Vintage portrait’ this is a mixed-media artwork with digital painting.
